Not The Same Old Legal Stuff . . .
In most software manuals, you will find legal restrictions
in this place. This is different. You will see the legal
limitations on the software's screen rather than in this
manual. When you start the software, you will be asked to
accept the legal agreement.
This software comes in two forms: shareware and registered.
The software is essentially the same in both versions. The
main difference is the number of points of interest included.
The shareware version contains as many points of interest as
could be packed on one 360K diskette. The registered version
has many more listings.
Please distribute the shareware version so other persons can
also benefit from this software. All we ask is that you follow
the requirements listed in the software.
You may not distribute the registered version. The registered
version is distributed only by Facts Online. That's our way
to encourage people to register.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Congratulations! Now you have software that can make your
travel more enjoyable. With this software, you can pick the
points of interest that you want and ignore the rest. If you
plan to vacation in a region, you can select all the points of
interest in that area. If you have a specific interest, such
as aviation, you can choose those points of interest that fit
your interest.
When you make a selection, whether based on a geographical
area or subject of interest, you will be given all points of
interest in the specified area which meet your criteria. For
each place, you will be given the name, address, telephone,
type of place, description and the days and times open (where
available). You can view this information on the screen or
print it out to take with you.
This is the easy, fast way to find great points of interest.
Have fun on your next trip!
Chapter 2. Installation
Relax . . . You will find this installation a lot more fun than
hiking in Death Valley in the summer. First, we will review the
computer requirements; then install the software.
Computer Requirements
This software is designed to have few hardware and software
requirements.
1. DOS 2.1 or higher.
2. Memory with 500K available. Watch out for those memory
resident, pop up programs (TSR's).
3. Hard disk. This software will use less than 2 megabytes
of storage.
4. Color or monochrome monitor. Either is acceptable. (That's
right, you will have to find another reason to buy a super
VGA monitor.)
5. Printer. A printer is desirable but not required. Almost
any printer will work.
6. IBM PC or compatible, 286 or faster. The 286 chip or better
is for speed. 8088-XT's will run slow.
7. Explorer's hat. Your explorer's hat is optional. We like
Indiana Jones'.
By the way, another feature of this software is that your
CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files will not be changed.
Installation
1. Exit any other programs so you are at the DOS prompt.
2. Go to the root directory by typing:
CD\
3. Type the following to create a subdirectory named "Travel":
MD\TRAVEL
4. Change to that directory by typing:
CD\TRAVEL
5. Place the disk with the software in Drive A: or B:
6. Copy and uncompress the software files by entering:
A:FOTRAVEL
(If you are copying from your B drive substitute B: for A:)
This will uncompress all files and copy them from the floppy
drive to your hard disk.
See how easy it was. Definitely better than Death Valley in
the summer. Now it is time to put on your explorer's hat as
we go to the next chapter, where you will learn to operate the
software.
Chapter 3. Operation
In the prior chapter, we installed the software. In this
chapter, we will discuss how to find those great points of
interest. Like all explorers, we will go through each step
(screen) until we reach the treasures.
Starting the software
1. At the DOS prompt, go to the travel subdirectory:
CD\TRAVEL
2. Start the software by entering:
TRAVEL
When the software first starts, you will see the . . .

At the Selection Screen, you specify where and what you want.
To move down through the screen, press <Enter>. When the
cursor is the last entry (the name), pressing <Enter> will
take you back to the first entry (the state).
You can clear any entry you have made with <Space><Enter>.
Any item may be left blank. If you leaving all items blank,
then all points of interest will be selected. Alternatively,
you can fill in all five items or just some of them. The
selected points of interest will be those which meet all of
the items specified. (That's a logical "AND" if you are
technically inclined.)
This selection screen is the heart of the software so let's
look a few examples.
Example: Find all points of interest in California:
State = CA
Telephone Area Code = (Blank)
City = (Blank)
Type = (Blank)
Name = (Blank)
Example: Find all aviation points of interest in the USA:
State = (Blank)
Telephone Area Code = (Blank)
City = (Blank)
Type = AVIATION
Name = (Blank)
Example: Find all aviation points of interest in California:
State = CA
Telephone Area Code = (Blank)
City = (Blank)
Type = AVIATION
Name = (Blank)
Note that in all of the examples above, some of the items were
left blank. It is not necessary to fill in all items.
Now let's look at each item individually.
STATE - Enter the two-letter Postal Service abbreviation
for a state. The full name of the state will be shown along
with the abbreviation. An invalid state abbreviation will bring
up an error message. See Appendix A for a complete list of state
abbreviations. Remember that specifying a state is optional.
TELEPHONE AREA CODE - Enter any three digit telephone area
code. This allows you to search an area less than a state
but greater than a city. If the three digits are not a valid
area code, the search will be made but the number selected will
be zero. You can find a complete list of area codes in most
telephone directories.
CITY - Enter the name of the city desired. For easier
exploration, you can enter just the first part of the city's
name. If you cannot spell a name such as "Albuquerque", try
"ALB". This will return any points of interest in "Albuquerque",
but also any other city beginning with "ALB" such as Albany.
One word of caution, entering a city restricts the search to
the city entered, i.e., New York City, and will not include
other cities in the region, i.e., Brooklyn. The city is
determined by the postal address of the point of interest.
You can broaden the selection by leaving City blank and entering
the Telephone Area Code.
TYPE - With the cursor on Type, you will see a pop-up table
on your screen with all the possible entries. Use <Up-Arrow>
or <Down-Arrow> to move the light bar through this type table.
After you have the cursor on your type, pressing <Enter> will
select the type code. If you choose "all types", then all
points of interest will be selected. Type codes are covered
in more detail in the following chapter.
NAME - Name is the title of the place. You may enter
the complete name of the point of interest to limit the search
to that entry alone. A partial entry will find all points of
interest with that information anywhere in the name. For
example, if you enter "American", you will select points of
interest with "American" somewhere in the name.

└──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The Search and Count Screen looks similar to the Select Screen.
The criteria you provided are displayed on the left. The
numbers are the points of interest found for each item. The
"Match All Criteria" (at the bottom) is the total points of
interest that meet all of the criteria. Let's take a look at
some examples which may help you understand the searches.
Example: Here are the results of a "unthinking" search:
State = CA 150
Telephone Area Code = 619 28
City = San Diego 11
Type = Aviation 17
Name = (Blank) All
-----
Match All Criteria = 1
This tells you that there were 150 points of interest in
California, 28 in Telephone Area Code 619, 11 in San Diego
and 17 with Type=Aviation throughout the United States. The
"All" after Name=(Blank) indicates that this search was not
limited by an entry in Name. The Match All Criteria = 1 at
the bottom says that there was only one point of interest that
met all of the criteria: State=CA AND Telephone Area Code=619
AND City=San Diego AND Type=Aviation.
You may ask why do we call this search "unthinking?" If you
know the is only one city (San Diego), then there is no need
to waste your time specifying the state (CA) or telephone area
code (619). An exception is if there are more than one city
with the same name. (We see "Falling Rocks" in many states.)
Example: Now let's try another "unthinking" search with
the following results:
State = FL 30
Telephone Area Code = 619 28
City = (Blank) ALL
Type = (Blank) All
Name = (Blank) All
-----
None Selected
This search requested all of the points of interest in the State
of Florida with the Telephone Area Code of 619. There were 30
points of interest in the state of Florida and 28 in the 619
Telephone Area Code. However, since the 619 Telephone Area
Code is in California, there were no points of interest which
met both criteria. A simpler approach is to just specify the area
code.
Let's experiment with one more search before leaving this section.
Example: Suppose you want to find the Botanical Gardens in Los
Angeles. You might begin with a search as follows:
State = (Blank) ALL
Telephone Area Code = (Blank) ALL
City = Los Angeles 4
Type = Botanic Garden 15
Name = (Blank) All
-----
None Selected
This tells you that there were 4 points of interest listed in
Los Angeles and 15 Botanical Gardens listed in the United States,
but no Botanical Gardens listed in the City of Los Angeles.
However, Los Angeles is a large metropolitan area, so you might
search by Telephone Area Code instead of by City as follows:
State = (Blank) All
Telephone Area Code = 818 8
City = (Blank) All
Type = Botanic Garden 15
Name = (Blank) All
-----
Match All Criteria = 2
This tells you that there were 8 points of interest listed
in Telephone Area Code 818 and 15 Botanical Gardens in the
United States. It found 2 Botanical Gardens in Telephone Area
Code 818, one in San Marino and one in Arcadia, both in the
Los Angeles area, but not in the city itself.
You can start a new search by pressing the <Esc> key. Better yet,
let's learn how to see the details so you can plan your vacation.
At the "Search and Count" Screen, if you selected some places, you
press a key to move to the "View or Print" screen.
Screen View or Print Screen:

└───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
The purpose of this screen is to direct the output either to
the screen or to the printer. After you pick one, here is
what happens.
Screen View displays the information on your monitor. When
the details appear, <Down-Arrow> and <Up-Arrow> will
move you forwards and backwards through the selected points
of interest. Each point of interest will be presented
individually on the screen. When you see one you like, you
could print a copy from the screen by pressing the
<Print Screen> key.
Print out makes a report of the points of interest selected.
The contents are the same as presented in Screen View. Three
points of interest will be printed per page.
<Esc> returns you to the "Screen or Printout" Screen and
does not affect the selection.
Chapter 4. Type Codes
In the previous chapter on Operations, you were introduced
to Type codes for specifying your search. This chapter
provides more detail.
Searches by Type are limited to the categories listed in the
pop-up table. In the Selection Screen, whenever the cursor is
on Type, you get a pop-up table which lists the types available.
Here is what they include:
"all types" - This will give you everything! When you choose
all types, the selection item will be blank; i.e., no words
on the screen.
AMUSEMENT PARK - Large theme parks, amusement parks and
historical action parks.
AQUARIUM - Aquariums are displays of marine or fresh water life.
Sometimes an aquarium is part of zoo, museum or theme park.
ART - Collections of art, including paintings, sculpture,
photographs and decorative arts.
ASTRONOMY - Observatories or planetariums.
AUTOMOBILES - Collections and museums concerned with
automobiles, trucks and other road equipment.
AVIATION - Collections and museums concerned with aviation,
space technology, rockets, etc.
BOTANIC GARDEN - Formal gardens and arboretums.
CAVE - Caves/caverns open to the public and offering tours.
HISTORY - Museums and historic sites. Old mansions are included.
MARITIME - Museums and displays of ships, model ships and
nautical items.
MUSEUM - Permanent exhibits of art, history, or other artifacts.
In this software, museums are also coded with their primary
types, such as MARITIME. In other words, MUSEUM is very
broad so you can retreive a wide variety of types.
NATURE - Parks and exhibits, including natural history museums.
The NATURE code is quite broad so you can easily find a wide
variety of places. A search for Type = Nature may return
points of interest that are also coded with: Aquarium, Botanic
Garden, Cave, Park, Wildlife Refuge, Zoo and other codes.
PARK - National parks, monuments and preserves, hiking trails,
scenic rivers, and selected recreational areas.
RAILROAD - Railroad museums, scenic and historic railroads,
and model railroad exhibits.
SCIENCE - Science and technology museums, centers and exhibits.
WILDLIFE REFUGE - Wildlife refuges and sanctuaries.
ZOO - Zoos, wildlife parks and other live animal exhibits.
Each point of interest may have more than one Type assigned.
Some may have up to three Types. Carlsbad Caverns National
Park, for example, has three Type codes: Nature, Park and Cave.
Chapter 5. Troubleshooting
Error Messages:
There are very few problems that you might have with this
software, and they are easy to fix. Only three error
messages might appear from this software: (1) Not Enough
Memory, (2) Printer Problem, or (3) Fatal Error #...
Of course, if your computer should fail, it will create its
own error messages. However, we will limit this discussion
to the messages from this software.
1. Memory Error - This software requires 500K of available
memory. Most computers today have more memory than that.
The problem may be that the memory is being used by TSR's.
The error message is as follows:
FATAL PROBLEM. NOT ENOUGH MEMORY.
Your computer does not have enough free memory.
There must be at least 500K of available memory.
To check this, use the DOS command of CHKDSK.
Your DOS manual describes the CHKDSK command.
When this problem occurs, it may be a hardware
limitation. More likely, your computer may have
some TSR programs consuming memory. If TSR's are
the problem, see your TSR manual for instructions
on how to remove them.
If you get this memory message, here is what you can do:
(1) Check the total memory installed on your computer,
(2) Check available memory and (3) Check TSR's installed.
2. Printer Problem - This error usually means that you tried
to print and the printer is not hooked up or turned on. The
error will appear as follows:
PRINTER PROBLEM
Please fix the printer
press a key to continue
or <Esc> to return.
3. Fatal Error #... This error usually means that you have
a corrupted file. It may result from other kinds of problems,
but that is unlikely.
FATAL ERROR #__ RecNum% __ Count% __
ERROR LOCATION = __
If this is the first use, you should check with your supplier
to be certain that they gave you an operational copy. Also make
certain that all data files are in the same disk subdirectory area.
Three files are required: TRAVEL.EXE, TRAVEL.S1, TRAVEL.S2
If you have used this software before, then there may be
a hardware problem, a software bug or one of the data files became
corrupted. Please follow these steps to solve this problem:
1. Make a paper copy of this screen by hitting the <PrintScreen> key.
2. At DOS, make certain your computer has not failed.
3. Install this software again (to replace any corrupted files.)
4. If this is still a problem and you are a registered user, then
fax this sheet to Facts Online with your telephone numbers or call us.
The FAX number is (619) 483-0107.
If you get this problem, please follow the instructions on
the screen. Note: The files that end in .S1 and .S2 are
for shareware users. If you are using the registered version,
those files will end with: .R1 and .R2.
Customer Service:
Registration of your software entitles you to technical support.
Support is available by FAX, by telephone or by mail. (Fax is
the best.) The telephone numbers and address are on the front
page of this manual.
